California State Women's Appointment Project

Our Project Partners
California Women Lead is a nonprofit, nonpartisan association of women holding – or interested in holding – elected or appointed office. Our mission is to give California's women the tools they need to be successful in both their political and professional lives. We believe that the first step in encouraging women to be leaders is at the local level. Through our aggressive chapter expansion program, we have initiated chapters around the state with more on the way. Currently, CA Women Lead includes chapters in the Sacramento Region, the North State, the East Bay Region, the Inland Empire, Los Angeles, Kern County, Orange County, San Diego and San Mateo County.

When a woman strives to be a leader in her community, CA Women Lead has a training program to help her meet her goals. The generous support from CA Women Lead's Corporate Partners enables us to reach hundreds of women across all political, ethnic, and socio-economic lines and help them enhance their political and professional lives.

ENGAGE: CA Women Lead host appointment trainings throughout the state. This engages women who are thinking about getting politically involved and provides them with the nuts and bolts of applying for an appointment. Chapters keep track of appointment vacancies in their areas and share that information with chapter members. Women who participate in our appointments trainings become our "target" audience and we encourage them to next attend our one-day leadership trainings…

EMPOWER: The leadership trainings work to empower women with the belief they too could run for office. CA Women Lead hosts trainings throughout the year in conjunction with our nine chapters. Our topics of fundraising, campaign plan and message development have resonated in our successful trainings in the past. From here we will follow up with attendees to see if they are serious about running for office. If so we invite them to apply for our…

ELECT: "If Not You, Then Who?" Training California Future Women Leaders. Launching in January 2011 in the areas of San Diego, Sacramento, the Inland Empire and Los Angeles, these six week trainings give women, who are serious about running for local office, the skills they need to be successful. In addition to training women how to successfully campaign with topics such as: Creating the Perfect Campaign Plan, Rules of the Road: Complying with Campaign Law, How to Effectively Fundraise at the Local Level and Developing and Delivering Your Message - this program provides a support group of women with similar goals. Classes are limited to no more than 25 and each participant is teamed up with an "alumni" member of CA Women Lead who will be their mentor. CA Women Lead will also provide intensive follow up to ensure that these women do indeed run for office.

The CA Women Lead Board of Directors is committed to providing women from all backgrounds and economic levels the opportunity to become politically engaged. Over the past six years CA Women Lead has trained thousands of women on what it takes to be politically successful and through our networking and training have provided women the support they need to run for office or apply for an appointment. The National Women’s Political Caucus of California was founded in the midst of the modern American women’s movement when 320 women from 26 states met under the leadership of feminists such as Shirley Chisholm, Bella Abzug, Gloria Steinem, and Betty Friedan to form the caucus on July 11, 1971.

The first statement of purpose pledged to fight sexism, racism, institutional violence, and poverty. They chose to advocate for change by reforming major political parties, the election of women to public office, the advocacy of women’s issues, and the support of feminist candidates, regardless of party.

In the first three years of its existence, female state officeholders increased by 36 percent as a result of NWPC recruitment and leadership programs. By 1976, they formed a political action committee and began contributing financially to selected races. We now proudly state that we are a multi-partisan organization that respects a woman’s right to make private medical decisions without government interference.

NWPC CA
Many current feminist electeds from California and in the National and California State Legislature and Executive branch are NWPC endorsed members or supporters of NWPC. This includes Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, former Vice-chair of the Board of Equalization and now Congresswoman Judy Chu, former CA Congresswoman and now Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis, Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez, California Secretary of State Debra Bowen, former Assembly Speaker and current candidate for Congress Karen Bass, among many others.

NWPC CA is a multi-partisan grassroots organization dedicated to increasing women’s participation in the political process and creating a political power base designed to achieve equality for all women. NWPC CA identifies, recruits, trains and supports feminist women for elected and appointed office.

The California Commission on the Status of Women has the largest constituency of any organization, agency or department in State Government. Representing over 50% of California’s population, it is the only agency specifically dedicated to protecting the interests of California women and girls — ensuring women have equal rights and opportunity and that enacted legislation does not discriminate against women or otherwise undermine their status or their opportunities.

Established in 1965 as an Advisory Commission under former Governor Pat Brown, then signed into law as a permanent Commission by former Governor Ronald Reagan in 1971, the Commission is charged to study, recommend, and advise the Governor and the Legislature on inequities in laws, practices and conditions that affect women. Commissioners are appointed by the Governor, the President Pro Tem of the Senate, and the Speaker of the Assembly. The Superintendent of Public Instuction and the Labor Commissioner are statutory members. As an independent state agency, it does not duplicate the work of any other agency or organization in either the public or private sector.

The Commission supports public policies that meet the needs of women and girls throughout California. To best reflect their needs, the Commission holds public hearings every two years to learn from California women about the issues impacting them. This information is used to help determine the Commission's legislative and policy agenda for its work with the Legislature and the Governor.

Leadership California is a network of over 1,200 accomplished women leaders dedicated to advancing the leadership role of women in California and expanding their influence on California’s future. This growing, diverse network comes from Leadership California’s unique California Issues & Trends Program (CIT), a program that delivers to its participants new knowledge and understanding of the complex global, national and state issues and trends facing California.

Vision: Moving Women from Success to Significance™

Mission: To increase the number of educated, motivated and accomplished women leaders in California in the arenas of business and community and to engage them around cutting-edge trends and issues facing California from state, national, and global perspectives.

Organization: Leadership California, founded in 1988, is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) organization with a governing board of directors, dedicated staff and executive advisory council, working together to seek new opportunities for the organization and its women of achievement.

Results of What We Do
• We increase the number of knowledgeable, ready-to-lead women in California. We measure their level of knowledge about the State and its issues as we move through the program, building one session upon another for a comprehensive understanding of major issues in government, business and community.
• We involve over 50 "repeat customer" organizations across the state which regularly include women in the California Issues & Trends Program.
• We track the advancement of women who have been through the CIT and continue to engage our 1,200-member Alumnae Network.
• We provide women with important Continuing Education Credits to enhance their professional development and higher education through certification of the CIT by the University of San Diego.
• We build relationships among women leaders across sectors (corporate, higher education, government, nonprofit, professional services, entrepreneurs). We build understanding across the state through the diversity represented in our classes by sector, ethnicity, and geography.

Our Commitment to California
We are committed to preparing women to lead in communities, businesses and government entities across California. Diversity and inclusion are an essential value of Leadership California. We believe we must reflect all the women of California, not just one geographical area, not just one ethnic group, not just one sector.
We focus on the state's rich history, diversity, and the future of women leaders in the great state in which they live.
