Executive Director's Message - September 2017

Rachel Michelin
Executive Director/CEO
California Women Lead

Fall is always a busy time. School is back in session, the days get shorter, and we all get back into the swing of schedules.  Same is true at California Women Lead.  We ended our summer with a great trip to Washington D.C. with a few board members to talk about upcoming projects we are launching (more on that later), we hosted our East Bay LEADership Academy as well as released our report on the number of women serving in elected office in California (more on that below).

Now our attention turns to the fall and our upcoming events – our LEADership Academy Fresno is filling up fast!  Be sure to check out the great line up of women speakers.  We are thrilled to be working with Fresno State University on this (Go Bulldogs!).  We follow that up with an Appointments Training in Walnut Creek with Appointment Secretary Mona Pasquil and Assemblywoman Catharine Baker.  If you are in the area, be sure to RSVP!

In October, we are partnering with state board member Kathy McKim and AT&T to host our Los Angeles LEADership Academy in El Segundo.  Wait till you see who will be speaking at the event – it will be awesome!  Be sure to save the date – you won’t want to miss it!

We continue our partnerships with the League of California Cities Women’s Caucus and will be hosting a session at their annual conference in Sacramento as well as with the California School Boards Association at their conference in San Diego. At our San Diego CSBA breakfast, CA Women Lead board member and CEO for the California Emerging Technology Fund – Sunne Wright McPeak will be joining us as the guest speaker.

Plans are also underway for our Annual Conference in April 2018 at the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim. We will be offering a special track for women serving in Appointed Office as well sessions focused on advancing personally, professionally and politically.  More details to follow, but you won’t want to miss out!  We are also planning to share some exciting news about the future of California Women Lead.

The work we do to inspire women in their leadership journey is something I and the board of directors are passionate about. Recently, I was on the phone with a woman from Florida who was asking about our mission – so many folks can’t believe that women, and especially women in California, can work together to encourage each other to advance in leadership – especially in these polarizing times. That is what California Women Lead does – we are so unique to any other women’s organization in the county.  We do not have a litmus test on who we will work with, we do not focus on any one type of woman and we strive to provide an atmosphere where women (and men) can find common ground, work together and if they can’t agree, at least gain a better understanding of the different perspectives of others.

If you are a member of California Women Lead – THANK YOU! Your support helps us grow and provide more programs to more parts of the state.  If you are not a member, I hope you will consider joining . Your support not only gives you access to our great programs and statewide network, but helps us with our mission to ENGAGE EMPOWER ELECT.

I hope you will consider joining us at one of our upcoming events and please, forward this newsletter to other folks in your network who might be interested in the work we are doing. As always, if you have any questions about California Women Lead, our mission or the work that we do, please feel free to reach out to me directly.

In Leadership,
